What Is the TABE For?
The TABE is a test that covers basic academic skills in reading, math, and language. The TABE test is used by a variety of schools and organizations to assess your skill level in each subject as well as your strengths and weaknesses for various topics within each subject.
Schools and different organizations use your TABE scores to determine what courses you may or may not need to take upon entrance or where you might be placed in an organization. The TABE test is also used to help identify students who may need extra help or accommodations in order to be successful in their courses.
If you are a student who is planning on taking the TABE, it is important to understand what the test covers and how it can impact your academic future.
What is the TABE Reading Test For (What does it assess)?
Questions on the reading section of the TABE will be based on the topics relating to identifying key ideas and details, craft and structure, and integration of knowledge and ideas. Questions may require test takers to identify the main ideas, topic sentences, using text features to summarize text, evaluating sources, making inferences and drawing conclusions.
Test takers will also evaluate formal and informal language, tone, mood, transition words, the author’s purpose and the point of view.
To see how you do on these various topics on the reading section, take a realistic free TABE reading practice test that will include questions on all of these concepts. How Is the TABE Reading Test Scored?
The TABE test has three scores: a raw score, a scale score, and a GE score, otherwise known as a grade equivalent score. All areas of the TABE are scored the same.
You cannot pass or fail the TABE, the TABE scores are used for placement into various programs and schools. If you score on the lower end of the scale system, you will just be placed in a lower level or grade equivalent.
The score scale ranks test takers against other test takers at the same academic level ranging from literacy to advance.
Based on that level and score, the scale score is then translated into a GE score which correlates to different academic levels, for example, “11th grade level” or “8th grade level”. TABE Test takers will receive an assigned grade level for each subsection of the test.
