Test takers are allotted 2 hours and 45 minutes to take the Kaplan Nursing Admissions Test. What is on the KNAT?

The Kaplan Nursing Admissions Test has four sub-tests on math, writing, reading comprehension and science.

• The math section of the KNAT consists of 28 questions with a 45 minute time limit.

• The writing section of the KNAT consists of 21 questions with a 45 minute time limit.

• The reading comprehension section of the KNAT consists of 22 questions with a 45 minute time limit.

• The science section of the KNAT consists of 20 questions with a 30 minute time limit.

What is the passing score on the Kaplan Nursing Admissions Test?

The passing score on the Kaplan Nursing Admissions Test is a cumulative score of 65%. However, we recommend checking specifically with the RN or BSN program of your choice to see what their requirements are for scoring.

What kind of math is on the Kaplan Nursing Admissions Test? 

The math section of the KNAT includes questions on addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, ratios, percentages, proportions, fractions, decimals, operations with fractions and/or decimals, algebraic equations with one variable, roots, radicals, exponents, standards of measure, and real-world mathematical applications.

What kind of science is on the Kaplan Nursing Admissions Test? 

The science section of the KNAT focuses on evaluating the test-taker’s knowledge of biology, human anatomy, and physiology.

From the biology questions, test-takers should expect to see questions related to cells, human structure, photosynthesis, DNA, and the scientific method.

The anatomy and physiology section of the Kaplan Nursing Admissions Test poses questions about the organization of the human body, the cardiovascular system, gastrointestinal system, endocrine system, reproduction system, nervous system, respiratory system, reproductive system, urinary system.  In addition, the test includes questions on the skeletal, muscular, and integumentary systems.

What kind of reading comprehension and writing is on the Kaplan Nursing Admissions Test?

The reading comprehension section features four passages and questions related to the logic and reasoning of language.  Expect questions about understanding the author’s purpose,  establishing the main topic idea and supporting details, making inferences, drawing conclusions, and evaluating data.   

On the other hand, the writing section of the KNAT features nine passages. Students should expect questions relating to vocabulary acquisition, the eight parts of speech, types of clauses, types of sentences, subject-verb agreement, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.

 Although reading and writing go hand-in-hand, the writing section will use nine passages to test for the crucial skills specific to the knowledge and conventions of standard English.   

Can you use a calculator on the Kaplan?

Yes, you can use a calculator on the Kaplan Nursing test. However, you are not allowed to bring your own calculator. If you’re taking the KNAT in person, a 4-function calculator will be provided to you. If you’re taking an online proctored version of the Kaplan Nursing test, a 4-function calculator will be available on your testing screen.

How many times can you take the Kaplan Nursing Exam? 

How many times you can take the Kaplan Nursing Exam over varies based on the program you’re applying to. Some programs allow applicants to take the Kaplan Nursing Admissions Test every 30 days, whereas other schools may only allow the applicant to take the test twice. Check with your desired program to confirm the number of times you can take the Kaplan Nursing Exam and the passing score requirements.

How do I prepare for the Kaplan Nursing Exam? 

The best way to prepare for the Kaplan Nursing Admissions Test is to take the proactive steps to pass the KNAT which includes:

  1. Take a free KNAT diagnostic test to determine your initial strengths and weaknesses.
  2. Identify your weaknesses and make a plan to study those subjects over the course of 1-2 weeks. When choosing a topic to study, be specific. For example, you don’t want to study “math” you want to study the standards of measure.
  3. Take a practice test every 10-14 days to measure your improvements from your dedicated studying time.

What do I bring to take my Kaplan Nursing Admissions Test?

On the day of your KNAT, be sure to bring:

• Government Issued ID such as a passport, state ID, or driver’s license .

• #2 Pencils

• Facial Covering, if mandatory in your state.

• Your confidence!

On the day of your KNAT, be sure NOT to bring:

• Cell phone, tablets, or smart watches.

• Non-goverment issued ID such as a library card or student ID card.

• Large bags such as totes, large purses, or backpacks.

• Food or Beverages

• A calculator
